I Ribe stiger solen op

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

The sun rises in Ribe

The Swedish/Danish sextet is back with their sixth studio album, Manifest. Once again, they have allied themselves with producer, studio owner and sound wizard Jacob Hansen (Volbeat, Hatesphere et. al.) and have been on a trip to Ribe to record their album. The lineup has not changed since last time, though this time, they have invited some guests - which I will get into later. Many have denounced them for leaning more towards the popular genre; for being "dance metal" and the like. Amaranthe is certainly not unique in this slightly broad genre, but at least they were some of the first “on the market”. On Manifest there has been room to play, and we move through different genres such as rap, pop duets and good solid metal!

The dynamic trio

With the 12 songs on the album, they have not reinvented the wheel, however, they have managed to renew themselves a bit compared to the previous albums. The style they laid out for Helix (2018), they continue on Manifest, though more focused and determined. Amaranthe is a bit unique, though otherwise mentioned, in that they have three vocalists; each of whom contributes to a special dynamic in their music. You could say that if Sabaton, Arch Enemy and The Agonist got a little loose at a 90s party, nine months later this bastard would come out of it. There are elements of all three bands’ style on this record at the same time as the undeniable kick-in of a bit of 90s pop inspiration, and that's what makes you either love them - or you just scroll on.

They have become more consistent in their use of synths / backtrack on almost all songs, without it becoming eurodance metal in 2020. Fans of Amaranthe will no doubt be able to nod in recognition of songs like "Fearless", "Viral", "Adrenaline" and "Archangel" just to name a few. On the record there has also been room for a real power metal ballad "Crystalline", which is a pretty cool duet between Nils and Elize, without it becoming too much of a cliché.

Where it gets more interesting is on "BOOM!1", which offers hard rap sequences, samples and mixed with the cool vocals, even with Heidi Shepherd (Butcher Babies) as a guest singer. Manifest ends with the song "Do Or Die", which sounds like a slap in the face to people about being serious about our world, climate and not least the challenges that follow instead of just standing by passively. At the same time, it’s spiced with Angela Gossow's (ex-Arch Enemy) brutal and yet beautiful vocals.

If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it!

If you expect something completely new and spectacular from Amaranthe, well, then this is not the album you should invest in. On the other hand, it’s not necessarily the intention, that is, to be innovative and groundbreaking all the time? Amaranthe do what they do best - and that is to deliver a mix of pop-hooks, beautiful and hard vocals as well as a rhythm section that beavers away to set the right mood. The style from Helix (6/10 skulls with Heavymetal.dk) continues somewhat here on Manifest, though even more has been put to the test, maybe because they’ve now signed with Nuclear Blast! Either way, Manifest is a well-produced and polished piece of music from beyond… and a little Denmark!

Hopefully, we will soon be able to link to awesome music videos from Youtube again. Until then you’ll have to make do with a Spotify link for the song ”Viral”
